In what continues to be the most watched High School Football Game in Fox Sports History. The Warriors entered the Lions Den for the 2nd time in the season to face Oaks Christian to determine the 2010 CIF Southern Section Northern Division Championship. The Lions squeaked away with a 29-28 win in a battle that lasted until the final play of the game.

The Warriors were the defending CIF SS ND Champions and  seeking their first ever back to back CIF Championships. The Lions were no stranger to being in CIF Championship Games as they had won 6 of their own in the 10 years prior to joining the Marmonte League.

The Warriors defeated St. Bonaventure 37-27 on Friday, December 3rd while Oaks Christian beat the Valencia Vikings 42-33 at College of the Canyons on the same night. Together these teams are 2/3 owners of the Marmonte League Crown with St. Bonaventure. This was the first ever CIF Championship match up between these two schools and have only met once before, earlier in the season  on October 1, 2010 with the Warriors winning that game, also televised on Fox Sports West / Prime Ticket. This was the 2nd season in a row featuring 2 Marmonte League teams in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division Championship Game.

Rematch. Redemption. Intensity. Intrigue. There are enough adjectives to describe this upcoming game to please any English teacher looking for a new rubric before the semester ends. One thing is certain; these two teams have already produced the most exciting football game in Ventura County this year and all the marbles are on the table now. It was black Friday in a bad way for the visiting Palos Verdes Sea Kings Football Team and their fans. Those who made the trip North up the 405 and 101 to Westlake High Schools’ Warrior Stadium on another cold Friday night saw how much the Warriors can heat up the field when they turn the afterburners on, again and again.

quote from the above article:

“Mowry carried 11 times for 111 yards, Isham reached the 300-yard passing plateau by going 13 for 15 and Westlake kicker Alex Ball was a perfect 7 for 7 on extra points. Jared Fry caught two passes for 48 yards, Cody Tuttle had two for 53 yards and Tre’Shon Wilson hauled in four aerials for 41 yards.”

Congratulations to Tavior Mowry for breaking the Warriors ALL Time Touchdown record during the game.

The Westlake Warriors started fast and never looked back in their win over Calabasas High School in the Coyotes’ home stadium and their Marmonte 2010 league finale. Led by senior quarterback Nick Isham, the Warriors looked as sharp as they have all season, despite playing a Coyote Football team who had their best season in recent history in a much tougher Marmonte League. The Warriors, to their credit racked up a 35-0 lead in the first quarter before taking their foot slightly off the accelerator pedal of “The Big Blue Tribe” to cruise to a 56-6 win and into the CIF playoffs, finishing the season tied for 1st place with St. Bonaventure and Oaks Christian.

It will be remembered and talked about for years as a classic game from start to finish between two top notch Ventura County High School Football programs. Coach Todd Theirrien’s “all or nothing” gamble paid off when the Seraphs successfully completed a two point conversion after their TD in  the 2nd overtime to beat the Warriors and end their 22-0 win streak. Westlake had not lost a game in almost 2 years, dating back to a CIF SS Quarter Final loss to Valencia to end the Warriors 2008 season.

The game was played in front of a packed Westlake Warrior Stadium crowd and streamed live to a record 235 viewers over the fledgling “all volunteer” production team for the WHS Football Network. The game is also being replayed over the weekend on multiple Cable TV channels. You can view all types of videos and articles at the links below:

A packed Newbury Park Panther stadium on a cool overcast night was the setting as the Panthers looked to unseat the Warriors from their Marmonte League top perch.

Westlake cruised to a school record 20th straight win in what was hoped to be a repeat matchup of similar intensity to the CIF SS 2009 title game from last December. But, it was not that at all. This time the Warriors were not the underdogs, they were coming in ranked #3 in CA and in the top 10 nationwide. Could Moorpark pull off a win over the overconfident Warriors? Uh, No. Not even close. It’s actually rather remarkable that in less than 12 short months, the Westlake Warriors have outscored the Moorpark Musketeers in each of the three contests pitting the Marmonte League rivals against one another. I will have to research to see if that has ever happened at all. The Marmonte League ain’t what it used to be – Nope, everything is upside down and sideways. What? You didn’t hear that Calabasas beat Newbury Park tonight?

How did Westlake continues its winning streak? Well, some but not all highlights are listed below:

First Quarter: Nick Isham had a 7-yard touchdown run.

Second Quarter: Tavior Mowry scored  on a touchdown run. Nick Isham threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Spruce

Third Quarter: Nick Isham threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Spruce. Tavior Mowry ran for a 1-yard score.

Fourth Quarter: Moorpark scored on a 14-yard Grant Rohach pass to Lionel Poole and a 5-yard run by Garrett Dibene.

Watch the first half of the game again below:

Thanks to all who worked hard to make it happen and those who came out to energize the Westlake Warrior Nation in anticipation of the 2010 Marmonte League opener against perennial cross town rival, the Thousand Oaks Lancers. Pep Rally began roughly at 5:45 pm (right after Varsity Football practice) on Tuesday, September 14th on the baseball field adjacent to Warrior Stadium. Wearing Blue and Orange Warrior Nation colors, attendance was estimated at 250. Way to ignite some “burning desire” deep in collective hearts & minds of the Warrior Nation !

After a moving tribute to fallen warrior AJ Castro prior to the game. Tonight’s game against the Oxnard Yellow Jackets felt like the Warriors started the 2010 season where they left off 2009. Well, with one notable exception – a healthy Nick Isham leading what should be called the Westlake Sonic Boom offense. You know, that sound that aircraft make when breaking the sound barrier? It’s that rapid “Boom – Boom” sound that you hear and then wonder what just happened. That is likely how Oxnard felt because before they knew it, Westlake was leading 14-0 with less than 7 minutes left in the first half.

How? First Nick Isham found Nelson Spruce in the corner of the East end zone with a perfectly placed pass that Spruce elevated to catch. After the TD, I could hear the ‘narrowcast’ color commentator Steve Hange utter my new favorite line, “There are 3 things in life that are certain, Death, Taxes and Nelson Spruce coming down with the ball in the end zone”. Steve was in the booth with Rob Bloom, Westlake play by play announcer extraordinaire. I thought they did a good job and hope they come back to work the League Opener vs Thousand Oaks next Thursday. But don’t take our word for it, watch the replay of the game yourselves and let us know what you think.

Nick Isham, Westlake Starting QB returns!

The Westlake Warriors finished their magical march to a perfect 14-0 season by winning the CIF Southern Section Northern Division Championship in a 14-10 come from behind win over the Moorpark Musketeers, now a seemingly perennial CIF Finals bridesmaid. With heart, determination & grit that defied the stereotypes that many a naysayer tried to hang on the 2009 Warriors since before this season even started, the “band of brothers” persevered under the guidance of Coach Jim Benkert and his loyal and talented coaching staff.

Moorpark played their usual aggressive ‘smack you in the face, then hit you in the back of the helmet on your way down’ when the officials aren’t looking style of defensive play. Westlake didn’t help their cause due to several missed scoring opportunities by that could have torn the game wide open.

In any event, the Warriors were behind early in the third quarter when their game changing play maker quarterback Nick Isham was knocked out 0f the game with a broken collar bone and things definitely looked bad for the home team at that point. Racing through everyone’s minds for at least a nanosecond was, “Would this magical season just end, falling down like a house of cards or would one more dose of intestinal fortitude rocket the Warriors forward to get one more win to seal their destiny into the record books forever?

Ah, just read the details in the Ventura County Star, it’s late, I’m tired and they have already posted! What can I say, I stopped off at Chili’s for the Champions celebration of dancing &  toasting in traditional Warrior fashion, with native indian drums beating , while chanting “Un-De-Fe-Ted” and holding arrow head tipped hunting spears above our heads.

The Westlake Warriors beat the St. Bonaventure Seraphs 17-7 in CIF Southern Section Northern Division Semi-Final Game. In an epic match up between two offensive powerhouses, no one predicted a defensive battle of the ages. At times it felt like classic heavyweight boxing slug fest between two champions that may end up in a decision by the judges if no knockdown punches were thrown.

At halftime, the score was 0-0, and most of the crowd was relatively quiet, contemplating the historic implications of what they were witnessing. In the end, being kept in the game by their tough defensive side, the Warrior quick strike offense came to life and scored 10 points in the second half to put them ahead 10-7 with less than 1 minute left in the game.

The stellar Warrior Defense put their signature on the game with a fumble recovery TD when the Seraphs were deep in their own territory and attempted a trick play that backfired.

In the end, as hundreds of Warrior students rushed the field to join the team in celebration and the crowd of almost 7,000 slowly left the stadium; most realized that the Westlake Warriors, in their own way issued the St. Bonaventure Seraphs a warm welcome to the Marmonte League. This game marks the 3rd time the 2 schools have met in 6 years. Westlake has won 2 out of the 3 games. Starting next year in the 2010 season, the two teams will play at least once a year in regular season Marmonte League play for the next 4 years.

The Westlake Warriors grabbed for the brass ring and took the Marmonte League title from the Moorpark Musketeers en route to a perfect 10-0 regular season record. At home in front a capacity crowd of nearly 7,200 spectators the ‘underdog’ Warriors dominated from start to finish with an explosive offense that lit up field like the 4th of July. To make it even more impressive was that the Westlake Warriors did this to  a Moorpark defense that had only surrendered an average of roughly 7 points against all other Marmonte League competitors all season long. The night began with a wonderful Westlake Football tradition of recognition of all the Senior Warrior players and their families in front of the entire stadium at a ceremony prior to kickoff where each player presented their parents with a rose and a letter of appreciation for all their support. Thanks to Coach Jim Benkert and the entire coaching staff for their hard work and dedication to make this season something truly special. And it ain’t over yet!

Guys, please let us know….

The first Marmonte league game of the season against the archrival Thousand Oaks Lancers proved to be the toughest contest for the Westlake Warriors so far this season. The Warriors, back in their home stadium after two weeks on the road, to a “standing room only” crowd prevailed with an impressive combination of offensive firepower. This offensive onslaught, combined with their consistently improving defensive squad proved too much to handle for their visiting opponent.
