In a year when Marmonte League games were beginning to get predictable, another potentially unpredictable game at Agoura Hish School seemed well…refreshing. And, being the same weekend as Halloween – you kinda thought something spooky would happen. Uh, no and no. The Westlake Warriors continue marching  to the beat of a different drummer as they extended the schools longest winning streak to 22-0 and commanded top spot in the Marmonte League and #1 rank in the CIF SS Northern Division.

QB Nick Isham, Running Back Tavior Mowry, Wide Receiver Nelson Spruce and Running Back Geoff Carr all scoring at least 1 touchdown. Alex Ball converted all 7 PATs.

Next week’s big contest with St. Bonaventure is a rematch of last years’ CIF semi-final game between the two Ventura County powerhouse teams.

There was literally lightning in the Northwestern sky 15 minutes prior to game time. Symbolism perhaps from the highest authority on Football? This much anticipated game was sold out in just 3 days. On Friday night October 1, 2010 in Westlake Village, a town of only 8,800; with a game televised live on Fox Sports, 6000 screaming fans filled the sold out Lions Stadium to watch the visiting Westlake Warriors play the Oaks Christian Lions in a rivalry that had yet to begin.

The Warriors are now 4-0 for the season, 3-0 in Marmonte League play and are on an 18-0 winning streak that began last season, a school record.

OCHS Game Q3 Drive

Warriors vs OCHS Game Q3 Drive

After a moving tribute to fallen warrior AJ Castro prior to the game. Tonight’s game against the Oxnard Yellow Jackets felt like the Warriors started the 2010 season where they left off 2009. Well, with one notable exception – a healthy Nick Isham leading what should be called the Westlake Sonic Boom offense. You know, that sound that aircraft make when breaking the sound barrier? It’s that rapid “Boom – Boom” sound that you hear and then wonder what just happened. That is likely how Oxnard felt because before they knew it, Westlake was leading 14-0 with less than 7 minutes left in the first half.

How? First Nick Isham found Nelson Spruce in the corner of the East end zone with a perfectly placed pass that Spruce elevated to catch. After the TD, I could hear the ‘narrowcast’ color commentator Steve Hange utter my new favorite line, “There are 3 things in life that are certain, Death, Taxes and Nelson Spruce coming down with the ball in the end zone”. Steve was in the booth with Rob Bloom, Westlake play by play announcer extraordinaire. I thought they did a good job and hope they come back to work the League Opener vs Thousand Oaks next Thursday. But don’t take our word for it, watch the replay of the game yourselves and let us know what you think.

The game should be aired sometime after midnight and once up should be available to watch 24/7 all weekend on the following venues:

In another fireworks show filled with explosive offensive plays, the Westlake Warriors beat the visiting Ventura Cougers 49-27 for their 11th straight victory in the first round of the CIF SS Northern Division Playoffs. The Ventura Cougars came to play, however and began the contest by recovering an onside kick and driving down into Westlake territory and  kicked a field goal when stopped by the Warrior defense in the Red Zone to make it 3-0 to start the game. The Westlake Warriors grabbed for the brass ring and took the Marmonte League title from the Moorpark Musketeers en route to a perfect 10-0 regular season record. At home in front a capacity crowd of nearly 7,200 spectators the ‘underdog’ Warriors dominated from start to finish with an explosive offense that lit up field like the 4th of July. To make it even more impressive was that the Westlake Warriors did this to  a Moorpark defense that had only surrendered an average of roughly 7 points against all other Marmonte League competitors all season long. The night began with a wonderful Westlake Football tradition of recognition of all the Senior Warrior players and their families in front of the entire stadium at a ceremony prior to kickoff where each player presented their parents with a rose and a letter of appreciation for all their support. Thanks to Coach Jim Benkert and the entire coaching staff for their hard work and dedication to make this season something truly special. And it ain’t over yet!

The Westlake Warriors overcame adversity to win the game in their toughest test this season against a talented and energized Newbury Park Panther Team playing on their home field. The Warriors stay unbeaten, improve their record to 7-0 and stay in 1st place in the Marmonte Leaque.
