In just their second Marmonte League contest, the 2011 Westlake Warriors held the Thousand Oaks Lancers scoreless for 48 minutes under the lights of Lancer Stadium on Friday September 23, 2011….but then 6 seconds were placed back on the clock after time ran out to allow the sputtering Lancer offense a consolation TD on the final play. The game featured an array of big plays that showcased Westlake’s depth of offensive firepower. All plays were made to appear easy by the dominant Warrior Offensive line led by Seniors Keith Ramljak (T), Jordie Hannel (C), Anthony Devanzo (G)

Warrior Defensive Line comprised of Johnny Stuart,  Justin Solis, Shane Henley, Tony Mekari, Beau Hunsicker, Kyle Erickson,  and Kenneth Ah Ching stymied the Thousand Oaks Offense all night, only allowing them across the 50 yard line twice the entire game.

Wow! What a difference a day makes. Sporting a 2-0 record on Sunday September 18, 2011, the  Westlake Warrior Varsity Football Squad led by Justin Moore were ranked #11 for the State of California, just a scant 0.2 points behind self proclaimed ‘football factory’ #10 Centennial (Corona, CA) But within 24 hours, the new rankings came out and we were inundated Warrior fans going to the link only to find that Westlake had moved up +4 to a  #7 ranking and +14 nationally to a #39 ranking. Thanks for setting me straight! The Warriors face Cross town Rival Thousand Oaks Lancers Friday September 23, also 2-0 fresh off a big 27-24 win over Moorpark (#782 Nationally  and #79 in CA) after the loss . See the current Warriors rankings here (Please, don’t ding me if they change in the future – because no matter what happens, they will):

Westlake Warriors State and National Rankings

Rumors of the demise of the Warriors by a vicious Coyote attack were greatly exaggerated.

Justin Moore tossed three touchdown passes and ran for another – all in the first half – as the host Warriors won 63-0. Westlake (2-0) scored touchdown on eight of its first nine possesions. Moore completed 7 of 9 passes for 168 yards and scampered 13 yards for a touchdown before giving way to backup Neal Uskali. Connor Cook, Zack Mumford, Cody Tuttle and Jarrius Bishop had touchdown receptions of 74, 32, 29 and 7 yards, respectively. Westlake kicker Alex Ball, who is Ventura County’s all-time leading scorer, established the County record for most point-after attempts and conversion made with his eighth PAT, which put Westlake ahead 56-0 at the intermission. Calabasas (1-1) was held to 58 total yards and three first downs. An impressive Warrior defense had 7 sacks on the night.

The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat were up for grabs as the Westlake Warriors took on the highly touted Del Oro Golden Eagles in what was billed as the “Battle at the Capital”. The event was a 3 day affair over Labor Day weekend that included many of the top rated teams in Northern California. In the Headliner game on Saturday night September 3, 2011 against the hometown Golden Eagles, Justin Moore led the Warriors to their first victory in a see saw game that went into overtime after a great play by Del Oro blocking a potential winning field goal attempt by the Warriors. It ended in storybook fashion, though with Alex Ball able to split the uprights with the winning field goal to end the game. It was sweet redemption for Ball, who had has 9 months to shake off  the heartbreaking ending to the CIF championship loss to Oaks Christian. Ball was stellar as a nullifying weapon for Coach Jim Benkert’s special teams against a Del Oro team that has some incredibly talented running backs. Every kickoff that Ball attempted; with the exception of one (due to a 15 yard celebration penalty after a Warrior TD) sailed out of the end zone to make Del Oro start every Offensive set from their own 20.
