Freshman FAQ

Q: When does football for the 2015 season begin?

A: Freshman football officially begins on June 15, 2015 at the Freshman Parent/Player Meeting. Practice gear and merchandise will be sold beginning at 5:00pm and the information meeting for both parents and players begins at 6:00pm. The meeting location is at the WHS Carpenter Theater.

Q: When does practice for freshman begin?

A: June 16, 2015. Practice will be held daily during the summer until the “dead period” and resumes in August.

Q: What is the “dead period”?

A: The “dead period” refers to a three-week time period where no practice or contact with coaches is allowed per CIF rules. Westlake HS football dead period is July 12-August 2. Parent Hint: Dead Period is the ideal time to plan your summer vacation.

Q: What does my player wear for summer practices?

A: Players are asked to wear white shirts, black shorts, cleats, socks and a mouth guard. The boosters offer the recommended WHS Football black shorts and t-shirts at a very reasonable price. They may be purchased at the freshman parent meeting. Parent hint: The boys practice every day in the summer heat. We recommend purchasing a couple pairs to lessen your nightly laundry load!

Q: What happens at summer practice? Is my player required to attend?

A: Players will be participating in weight lifting, conditioning and on-field practice. All players are encouraged to participate in summer practice. Coaches use the summer not only to evaluate where players fit best on the field but also to develop valuable relationships with each player.

Q: My player plans on taking summer school, does practice interfere with summer classes?

A: Practice does not interfere with the summer classes offered by CVUSD.

Q: When will my player receive their helmet, shoulder pads and other equipment?

A: Equipment will be handed out in August (after the dead period). The players will not practice in the equipment until they have completed the required conditioning hours (approx. August 10th).

Q: My player is a school choice applicant but has not received the official admission paperwork?

A: School choice is a CVUSD process. Until your player has been officially admitted to the district and to Westlake High School, they will not be added to the football roster nor can they participate in WHS practices. Please contact the district and/or school office with any questions.

Q: Does the August practice interfere with W.O.W. week?

A: W.O.W. week is a weeklong orientation for incoming freshman. It takes place in the mornings. The freshman coaching staff tries to plan practices so players can participate in the optional W.O.W. week program.

Q: What if my player is a multi-sport player?

A: Since football is a fall sport, attending football practices is a priority. However, we recommend you contact the head coach of the winter or spring sport your player is interested in to let them know of your situation.

Q: Once school begins, how often do the teams practice?

A: Freshman practice daily, including some Saturdays, during the season. Football players are placed in 7th period P.E./Football. Practice end times will be communicated at the freshman parent/player meeting.

Q: When are the freshman games?

A: Most Freshman games are scheduled for Thursdays at approx. 5:00pm though, depending upon the opponent, games could be as early as 3:00pm. Home games are played at the WHS Stadium.

Q: Why do we not play all the local teams in the area?

A: The CIF Southern Section (the governing board for all high school sports in Southern California) went through a re-league process which took effect in the 2014 season. Leagues were determined based on the strength of each school’s football program, prior records and various other factors. Each of the leagues goes to a different playoff division and therefore, cannot meet in the playoffs.

Marmonte League (PAC-5 Division-Div I for Playoffs)

  • WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL
  • St. Bonaventure
  • Oaks Christian
  • Moorpark

Camino League (Northern Division-Div III for Playoffs)

  • Newbury Park HS
  • Thousand Oaks HS
  • Camarillo HS
  • Royal HS

Canyon League (Western Division-Div VII for Playoffs)

  • Simi Valley HS
  • Oak Park HS
  • Agoura HS
  • Calabasas HS

Q: Do the players have a study hall during football season?

A: Freshman players report to a study hall daily for 7th period. After 7th period, they change in the locker room and report to the field for practice.

Q: If practice begins at 4:00pm, what time should my player arrive?

A: When coaches give a practice start time, the expectation is for the players to be dressed, ready and in the correct location AT the start time. Please plan on your player arriving at least 15 minutes early to go to their locker, change and get equipment prior to the start time.

Q: What can I do to become more involved during my player’s high school football years?

A: We are so glad you asked!!! Westlake HS Football Boosters is an all-volunteer, non-profit group whose sole purpose is to support the players and coaches in our program. We need your help!! We will be approaching you with many volunteer opportunities and strongly encourage you to volunteer even if it is just for a couple of hours of your time.

Q: If I have additional questions, who can I contact?

A: The boosters hold weekly meetings on Tuesday evenings at Westlake High School and/or you can contact us at vp@westlakehighschoolfootball.com.

Q: What is the school transportation fee and how does it work with football?

A: The transportation fee is collected by Westlake High School for all sports/activities that require bus transportation. The fee is usually paid at registration in August. If your player participates in multiple sports, the price is discounted for each additional sport. All bus transportation fee questions should be directed towards the WHS athletic office.
